"Until one has loved an animal a part of one's soul remains unawakened"

Anatole France

Today - Wednesday 20th February, we celebrate "Love Your Pet Day". Anyone who knows me, knows my love for animals of all shapes and sizes. Some of my hero's in life, are the likes of Virginia McKenna, Gerald Durrelll and of course Sir David Attenborough.

This week I take the opportunity to look at some endearing ocean partnerships between man (or woman) and their ocean loving best friends!

Some five years ago, I discovered a wonderful blog by the incredible Captain Liz Clark who has inspired me ever since. I have had nothing but admiration for her as a compassionate human being and spirited adventurer. But what really captured my heart, was the unbreakable bond between her, and her feline companion Amelia the Tropicat.

Named after Amelia Earhart, this little scrap of a kitten made her presence known to the fearless Captain and joined her on the good ship "Swell". Bossing the decks and ruling the roost, this little adventurer seemed born for a life on the ocean waves, accompanying Liz, on here shore bound adventures and becoming quite a little celebrity where ever they travelled.

Sadly little Amelia passed away at the beginning of last year, but you can watch the moving tribute to her below.

The Feline Kelly Slater??

More focus on cats now - and if someone told you that there was a one eyed surfing cat in Hawaii, would you believe them? Well we had to see it for ourselves, but it is indeed true.

Kuli (which translated means "to look blind") has been surfing with his owners Krista Littleton and Alexandra Gomez since he was six months old. They can all regularly be seen out on the beach together in Honolulu and they attribute his love for water to the regular baths he had as a kitten post eye surgery. He was rescued from the streets and a serious infection meant his eye had to be removed.

We just love this gnarly little dude.

In November 2018, some 3000 people gathered to watch the Annual "Hang 20" Surf Dog Classic Benefit Fundraiser, to raise money for the Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic and Ranch.

This was the 4th event of its kind, and despite the fun element, the festivities were created to highlight the plight of suffering and neglected animals and to raise some serious dosh to allow this wonderful foundation to catty on the incredible work that they do.

The event was sponsored by Land Rover Palm Beach, and was free to attend. The awareness raised for the shelter is invaluable as it is the only "no-kill shelter" open to the public in northern Palm Beach County. In the UK we are lucky enough to have organisations such as Dogs Trust, which operate a "no kill" policy.

Furry Friends Adoption, Clinic and Ranch .... we salute you!

Finally, Red Snapper Sports very own Sup Pups deserve a mention. On a day that celebrates "loving your pets" - these two trouble makers deserve a podium place. Honey and Teddi are the company mascots and my constant companions. You will be seeing them much more as the weather improves and they learn the joy of getting out on the paddle board and exploring the World around us! Until then, these land lovers will just have to astound you with their cuteness instead of their water skills!
