This week Red Snapper Sports unveils its 2019 collection of paddle boards, and in true style, they have stepped outside the boundaries of conformity to bring to the market beautifully designed, high spec boards, that utilise the industries most advanced technologies.

The Wild Side looks at the creative inspiration behind the brand and the story behind each design, which is seeing Red Snapper Sports become a serious contender in a flourishing industry, that continues to grow, year on year.

Step Back In Time

It's the 1950’s and 1960’s, and surf culture was exploding in Hawaii, Australia and California. It affected everything from music, fashion, literature, film, art and design. This period in time produced woodies (cars), bikinis, board-shorts (boardies), skateboards, the Beach Boys, Gidget and the association of the Shaka sign (a common Hawaiian greeting) with surfing and other board sports.

It also produced longboards, such as the wonderful Bear Surfboards, Bing Surfboards Jacobs Surfboards and Con Surfboards.

Long Board Culture

In the early 1970’s, skateboards started to become the canvass by which to express creativity - a unique way for riders to transcend the relationship between humans and their environment. Skateboard manufacturers started to set their brands apart, by adding graphics and logos to the decks. This soon evolved to full on “renaissance-esque” art and design.

Companies were small and independent, with most being based in California, and this was an effective way to not only spread the word far and wide - but also for skaters to find their “tribe”, based on the design, ethos and underlying message that the art was portraying.


What’s Your Tribe?

The 2019 Red Snapper Sports inflatable SUPS, have been influenced by this very same culture. On the face of things, the SUP decks have kept their simple longboard design, which proved to be so popular in 2018. Flip em over and it’s a different story. The bold designs underneath, were created to express a feeling - to engage in an emotion - and ultimately to pay homage to the heritage of this sport and the delicate balance of the ocean.

The Red Snapper 10’6 Inflatable SUP

Our 2019 edition of our most popular paddle board - the 10’6 all-round inflatable SUP, depicts the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle swimming in the ocean. We have affectionately called this our “Honu” board. The Honu (Hawaiian for sea turtle) is a symbol of luck, endurance and long life. It has also become the symbol for the unfolding environmental tragedy of plastic pollution, as reported on in our previous blog “Let’s Talk Turtles”. This board stands as a mark of respect and understanding, for the struggle that turtles and EVERY other sea dweller face as a direct result of inaction. It acts to remind us that sharing the oceans with these wonderful creatures is a privilege, not an entitlement.

The Red Snapper 11’6 Inflatable SUP

This year we have added to our collection of paddle boards and have the pleasure of introducing the 11’6 all-round  Inflatable SUP, which has been specifically designed with the larger and less confident rider in mind. The "Duke Board" represents, strength, power and exploration. This bold, Hawaiian influenced design, features a Tiki God and is a mark of respect to the origins of paddle boarding and the man that was so integral in its history - Duke Kahanamoku. Never let it be said that history cannot shape the future.
